The International Enneagram Association is a place for diverse Enneagram enthusiasts and professionals to come together to learn, engage and connect in community with members, chapters, affiliates, and accredited professionals and programs around the world and online. The IEA promotes breadth, depth and integrity and the constructive use of the Enneagram for growth and interaction in a wide variety of applications and settings. Carla Smith and Jan Shegda, IEA board co-presidents, and Rev. Trent J. Thornley, IEA president-elect, share their thoughts and perspectives.

Carla Smith

Co-President, International Enneagram Association

Carla Smith is co-president on the board of the International Enneagram Association. Carla first discovered the Enneagram over 20 years ago while working as general counsel and senior manager in a large financial services corporation. She has studied with a wide variety of Enneagram teachers, and has been active in the Minnesota Enneagram community including serving on the MN-IEA chapter board and receiving a full circle Enneagram training certification from MN-IEA founder and former IEA board member, Anne Muree. 

Since leaving the corporate world and active law practice, Carla has applied her governance and policy background to board service and support of mission-driven nonprofits and cooperatives. She also curates and hosts a live acoustic music house concert series. Carla received a BA in music from the University of Maryland, and her JD from Indiana University in Bloomington. She's an alumnus of the Center for Action and Contemplation’s Living School.

 

Jan Shegda

Co-President, International Enneagram Association; Owner, Clarity Coaching

Jan Shegda is co-president of the International Enneagram Association board along with Carla Smith. She is an IEA accredited professional, International Coach Federation professional certified coach (PCC) and executive coach with Clarity Coaching, where she specializes in the Enneagram for vocational and organizational development.

Rev. Trent J. Thornley

President-Elect of IEA & Executive Director of San Francisco Night Ministry

Rev. Trent J. Thornley is executive director and director of clinical pastoral education at San Francisco Night Ministry. Clinical pastoral education (CPE) is accredited field training for spiritual care leaders in a clinical context. Trent is a certified educator with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education.

Trent is an ordained minister in the Metropolitan Community Churches, a progressive Christian denomination with an outreach to the LGBTQ+ community. He is also an ordained Buddhist dharma leader in the Nyingma lineage of Anam Thubten and Dharmata Sangha. He holds a master's degree in Buddhist studies from the Graduation Theological Union and a certificate in Buddhist chaplaincy from the Institute of Buddhist Studies.

Additionally, Trent is a certified professional with the International Enneagram Association. He serves as president-elect and secretary of the IEA board of directors. In his CPE programs, Trent uses the Enneagram – both the personality and process teachings – when supervising and educating emerging spiritual leaders.
